THE YEAR'S WORK

COMMITTEE'S REPORT TO BE PRESENT^D AT ANNUAL MEETING. POSITION OF DENTAL CLINIC. The following is the Rotorua Priraary School eommittee's annual report to be submitted to householders at a meeting in the school building on Monday night: — In submitting the report for the year ending February, 1932, your committee first of all desires to express its regret in the loss it has sustained by the death of one. of its members, Mr. P. Scott. Our late member's help and advice were nxuch appreciated. Building. — The school buildings have been kept in good order and minor j repairs have been carried out. Doors that opeped inwards have been adjusted so that they open outwards. This is to avoid the danger in the event of fire. Repeated appeals haye been made for additional class room accommodation or the remodelling of the school, but the Auckland Education Board regrets the inability to grant these requests for economy reasons. The Head Master. — Your committee desires to place on record its appreciation of the valuable services rendered by the headmaster, Mr. B. M. Gi'een, who is at all times anxious and "willing to assist in every worthy object connected with the school. Its thanks are also due to the teaching staff of the school for services rendered during the past year.

Hot Drinks. — At a very small charge to the pupils, these were supplied during the winter months. Our thanks are due to Mrs. Davidson for her kindly efforts in th:s direction. It is intended to again supply the children with hot drinks during the coming winter. Herbert Smith Trust. — An application was made to this fund for a school trophy. It is pleasing to note that the request was Willingly accsded to. Your committee has pleasure in reporting that a handsome silver cup has been donated. It was decided to offer the cup for a basket-ball competition for primary schools in the district of Rotorua. It is gratifying to note that the Rotorua Primary School won the competition. Dental Clinic. — It will, we feel sure, be of great interest to the parents of this district to know that the prospects of establishing a dental clinic ape considerably brighter than they were last year. While the Government could not see its way to finance a separate building, it has all but promised to supply us with the necessary accommodation in King George Hospital. A dental nurse has been appointed and will take up her duties as soon as a building is available. A dental clinic committee has been formed with the Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson, as chairman. The necessary quota from each school in this district has been allocated by this committee and the sum of £50 has been collected towards the building. We trust that in the near future the balance of the sum desired will be forthcoming and that a dental clinie on uniform lines will be established.

School Grounds. — Parents will, no doubt, notice that great improvements have taken place in the school grounds in the shape of a new rustic fence, two pesrgolas of artistic designs, levelling of the ground for basket-ball play, grading of the western area, sodding of the bank on the Arawa Street frontage, eradication of noxious weeds, and vegetable garden dug and re-graded in the hope that a love for agricultural pursuits may be inculcated into the minds of the children. An unsightly tree on the western boundary has been felled and the timber cut up into useful blocks for school use. The grounds now present a tidy appearance. Staff and Roll Number. — The total number of pupils passed forward at the end of 1931, Standard IV, was, 87. The roll number at the end of March, 1932, was 575, average attendance for March was 480. During the year a number of changes took place in the staff and it is to be hoped that changes during this year are reduced considerably. The present staff consists of Headmaster, Mr. B. M. Green; Infant Mistress, Miss E. F. Bull; assistants, Mr. Robinson, Misses L. M Ray, M E. L. Hill, K. Vulger, M. E. H. Faram, H. M. Hillcoat; Messrs. C. H. Ludgate, and I. S Cruickshank, Relieving assistants, Misses T. A. Johnson, E. A. Holland and G. J. Manson. A moving picture entertainment was successfully arranged with the Majestic Theatre syndicate whereby part °f the proceeds were credited to the* school funds. Thanks are due to the abovenamed syndicate for its support in this direction.

Balance Sheet. — The position as it stands at present is that after allowing for all commitments the sum of £25 Ms lld is in hand to commence the 'nrrent year with. Bible Reading. — The Ministers' Association are still giving Bible lessons out of school hours, half an hour each ^eek. Attendance at these lessons 's optional. The children of parents Wwarding a leter to the headmaster stating that they do not wish their 'oildren to attend are excused. Sporting.— The girls won the Heriot Smith Trust Cup for the basketaii competition. The boys were run-5ers-up for the cricket competition. a closely contested game the ^nool team came third in the football ^ntest. My copimittee wishes to place on re"rd its appreciation of the loyal supgivep by the public in anything a°r welfare of the school.
