YE OLDE CAMPE

HOW THEY DEALT WITH UNEMPLOYED IN 1682. In view of the problems arising out of unemployment camps it may be interesting to know how our ancestors dealt with such conditions in 1682. The just;ces in various English counties established labour camps, putting the unemployed to clear the waste land along the great highway. It was soon found certaine lewd fellowes of the baser sort did not keep themselves cleanlie nor yet their camp and were given to ye ungodlie habits of swearing and playing for monie. Others too who were idle and did not toil as men should were ordered to be put in stocks while a parson preached to them for three hours on Sunday afternoon, and singers chanted suitable psalms. If the sennon and chanting were ineffective in Securing repentance, the offenders were to.be whipped and sent into a house of correction for three months with hard labour. This salutary law has never been repealed and could be proclaimed today.
