MOTOR CYCLING

SOME USEFUL HINTS FOR THE OWNER RIDER. CHANGING THE GEARS. j Gear-changing with the modern type i of motor-cycle gear-box will "usually j be found simplicity itself, provided the ; following instructions are followed: — ■ Before changing to a higher gear, always increase the road speed in the lower gear to such an extent that when the change has been made the engine will run smoothly and evenly; then eolse the throttle momentarily | and at the same tiine withdraw the clutch; and open the throttle. These operations, while perhaps seeming formidable in print, after very slight practice take little more than a fraction of a second. When elimbing a hill that necessitates changing-down, the main thing to remember is to make the change early, so that the engine revs. are kept up. When changing to a lower gear, the throttle should be left open and the engine revolutions allowed to mount up during the fractmn of a second that the clutch is withdrawn and the gear lever moved into the new jposition. Judgment as to the amount of throttle opening necessary under various conditions will come quite naturally in a very short time.
