ON THE MEND

OPTIMISTIC SUR-VEY OF TRADE RECOVERY IN ENGLAND (Published in the "Daily Mail") LONDON, Monday, "Is the world, on the mend?" the "Daily Mail" asks, emphasising that the depression is beginning to lift. It looks, the newspaper says, as if the worst was over in America. President Hoover's measures have already improved monetary conditions and thawed frozen credits. The position in Australia and Canada is sounder and confidence is growing in Great Britain, where the Budget is certain to balanca. Gilt-edged stocks have risen and the Stock Ex'change is cheerful. The bui'ial of free-trade makes for the revival of British prosperity. The rush of orders at the British Industries Fair convinces many manufacturers that an era of prosperity is impending. Viners, Limited, Sheffield, announce a big deal ^ at OTympia, an Australian firm buying 100,000 ounces of silver .tablewaro for £20,000. It is stated that the pqrchase is for a new enterprise outside Australia.

The Australian Director of Trade Publicity (Mr. Hyland) reports that continued foreign inquiries are certain to lead to a considerable development of business. "Be of good cheer. There is a better time coming," said the Chancellor of the Exchequex (Mr. Neville Chamberlain) at Birmingham. A strange and almost miraculous change, he said, had taken place in the aft'airs and situation of Great Britain since the gloomy days of September. Ottawa would lay the foundations of a new Empire firmly honded by reciprocal commercial relations.
