HAWKE'S BAY PROSPECTS.
It is obvious, with practically the same horses engaged, the form exposed at Hastings last Saturday will be the best guide when it comes to summing up the prospects for the day's racing at Hastings to-day, being staged by the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club. The course promises to be in fine order, with the sting taken out of it after recent rains. Royal Lineage won so well last week that he will again go very well, despite his big weight. He is on the same mark as Goshawk, and the latter is expected to show a big improv^ment on last week's running. Gold Ruler can be depended upon for another good effort, and wh'le this trio appeal most, King's Jest, Manuiri and Whakaue should not be out of it. * Hunting Moss and Chatter On will be having their fight over again in the Tomoana Hack, and the extra distance may see the latter getting closer. However, Hunting Moss seems to be too brilh'ant, and he should account for Chatter On and Joe.
( Form ought to work out well in the Juvenile Hand;cap, although Aescuius could not have been at top last week to be beaten so decisively. Speed won very convincingly, though the weight may not stop him again. Freeze is likely, while Princess Bell is not the same filly that she was ?arli'er in the season. Margaret Rose is a possibility, but perhaps the favourites will come from Speed, Aee,culus, Freeze and Margaret Rose in that order. Ormond Memorial There have been some notable pontests for the Ormond Memorial, most interesting, of course, having beer the Gloaming-The Hawk contest of a few years ago. Hunting Cry will be admirably su'ted by the conditions. and he is the one to have on side. In deed, it is difficult to sort one out as even likely to extend him, unless ii be Chrysology. The latter is morc than useful at a mile, but he is withir a pound of Hunting Cry, and on that score the latter is very nicely placed The issue is practically confined to this pair, for none of the others can be given more than a starter's chance. A heavy track will not he againsi Hunting Cry.
Now that the tracks are becoming softer, Malahat should soon be seer to more advantage, and it is probabk that he will turn the tables on Chopir to-day in the pr'ncipal handicap, thc President's Handicap, and this paii read much better than the Waipuku rau winner, Statuary, and the likeh lightweight, Court Lady. Pewa doe: not appear to be the horse he wa: earlier in his career, although he maj be expected to improve as the track: become easier. Fondle's Chances Of the seven in the Akit'o Highweight, Fondle's finishing efforts oi late hold out more than a suggestion of stamina, so this one ought to bc on hand at the finish of the mik hack. Lady Makere and Anemometer should improve on previous running. with San Quex probably the best oi' the lightweights. Royal Hunting has such a lot of pace that he w;ll be much sought after in the hack sprint, the Twyford Handicap, for he will not have Tai Ao to encounter on this occasion. Ii' Fondle is reserved here this may be his chance, but one cannot picture defeal for Royal Hunting, unless he craclcs up unexpectedly. Sabatini and Hunting Moss are the pick of the remaindar. EasTy the most entertaining racc of the day has been left till the last, this being the open sprint, the Okawa Handicap, for that good hack Tai Ao looks like being well tried out here. Great Charter is nicely placed and if he is quite sound he will give the others something to do. Tai Ao is within half a stone of him, and the latter will have to be good to account for Great Charter, both fit and well. Tai Ao is an ideal galloper and he is now at liis best, perhaps, if not liablc to improve still more. Moa. Bird is ;n nicely, while Imperial Fame is there to spring another surprise. Kaihoro won at Waipukurau and she should be all the better for that outing, if she is, she will prove a worthy substitute' for Souchong. Teller reads the pick of the others. The issue appears to rest hetween Tai Ao, Great Charter, Imperial Fame and Kaihoro.
