ANNUAL MEETING OF BAY OF PLENTY FEDERATION CLOSING SMALL SCHOOLS

WHAKATANE, Friday. The annual meeting of the council of the Bay of Plenty Federation of Women' s Institutes was held in the Parish Hall, Whakatane to-day. The following institutes were represented: Whakatane, Opotiki, Waitohi, Waimana, Nukuhou North, Taneatua, Edgecumbe, Otakiri, Matata, Manawahe, Paengaroa, Papamoa, Tauranga and Woodlands. An apology was received from Hautoki. Mrs H. Withy (Matata), the president, was in the chair. Reviewing the year's work, the president expressed her appreciation of the willing co-operation of her executive, and urged members to organise gardening, musical and dramatic circles. Special attention was given to the necessity for further community work, especially with regard to school committee work. The treasurer's report showed that the federation was in a very strong financial position. The shi'eld for the greatest yield of potatoes from three planted by six members was presented by Mrs 0. E. Wettenhall to the Paengaroa Institute, which recorded the wonderful yield of 265 lbs. Numerous interesting remits were discussed ,the most important being that by Mrs Morton (Papamoa), that representation be made to the Director of Education protesting against the proposed closing of small country schools and the compulsory teaching by correspondence, especially in regard to primer classes. Mrs L. Buddle, pleading urgency, moved the following remit which was earried: That the Federation support the Mothers' League in endeavouring to obtain the provision of a sitting room at the Whakatane District Hospital. The 'election of the new executive resulted: Mesdames 0. E. Wettenhall, H. Withy, L. Caverhill, A. P. Wylde, W. Gow, Stewart, Debreceny, C. R. French, A. B. Morton, Miss Chappell, and Mrs R. A. Macpherson. The election of the president, secretary and treasurer will be made from the executive. During the session, Dr. J. C. Wadmore gave a most interesting address on diet and a vote of thanks to the speaker was earried with acelamation. A display of handicrafts varying from copperwork to needlework gave rise to much appreciation and interest. Mesdames O. E. Wettenhall, Stowers and A. P. Wylde were appointed to deliver lectures through the medium of station 1ZR (Auckland)' on institute principles and their work. Afternoon tea was provided by the members of the Whakatane Institute and the meeting ended with a vote of thanks to the chair.
