FUNDS EXHAUSTED

"no other way out"

SERIOUS POSITION RELIEF COMMITTEE TO CEASE CONTRIBUTION TO WOMEN'S CLUB

Otoing to the depleted condi- * tion of th"e funds and the im'possibility of soliciting further con-" tributations from the public; the ' Rotorua UnemplpymenJ Relief committee last evening reluctantly decided that its contributation to the Rotorua Womens' Club for local subsidiary relief purposes must be discontiriued. . This will mean that the relief side a f the cdmmittee's activities stparfc from the distribution of the Unemployed Board allocation will practically cease to fiinction. It was reported by the Women's : Club representative on the committee (Mrs I. M. Davidson) that the club's fundfe were entirely depleted, while the committee, in its part, is faced with a most difneult position. The secretary (Mr A. W. McLean) reported that there was only £11 in hand and that a sum of approximately £40 must be paid to the Women's Club to settle outstanding liabilities. The committee's only possibility of finding this amount is in receiv'ng certain funds due from charitable aid, and a coritribution promised from the R.S.A. canteen fund. These moneys are not expected to yield £40, so that the committee is faced with the necessity to make up a deficit. Ovfer Five Hundred Pfeunds.. The secretary reported that in the h ne months since it had opened its banking account, the sum of £554 had been paid out by the committee for relief purposes. J Mrs Davidson stated that the Women's Club had paid out an average of over £30 a month for relief and liad assisted approximately 50 families during the same period. Its funds were now completely exhausted, and it had no further rasourcfes. It had outstanding liabilities to meet, and in thife connection, required an indieafcion as to the committee's attitude towards the payment of £56 still due from the committee in ' accordance with its aiTangement with the club. Mr. McLean stated that the committee had only £11 in hand. There was a payment due froni tlie Waikato Hospital Board on charitable and a certain amount of assistance had been promised from the R.S.A. canteeii fund. The hospital board paymerit would he handed over to the club and would reduce the amount to be found by the committee to about £40. Only Course Opeh Mr. Jackson said tbat the only course open appeared to be for the committee to endeavour to serape together the amount and then discontinue the contribution. It appeared that the possibility of raising further money from the public was remote as the public resources had been drained as far as was possible. The Rev. W. H. Speer asked whether under the Unemployment Bill at present before Parliament, - funds would not be made available for sustenance purposes. The secretary stated that this was correct. Charitable Aid The chairman said that be did not consider the committee had had the assistance it was entitled to expect from the Waikato Hospital Board. He thought that the board should be asked to forward a return showing tlie amount of assistance given in the Rotorua district. Mr. Jackson also expressed the opinion that if the committee could scrape up enough to pay its liability to the Women's Club, that was the most that it c.ould do. In any case it appeared impossible to continue the present arrangenient with the club. Mr. H. P. Ford expressed the opinion that the public had now contributed all that could reasonably be expected. With the further proposed taxation, they could not be drained any , further. It was decided, on the iriotion of the chairman ,to pay what moneys were available to the Women's Club; The secretary was also instructed to ascertain what amounts could be obtained to assist the committee from the R.S.A. canteen fund and the charitable aid funds. No Way Out After some further discussion, the chairman said he saw no other course • open hut to terminate the contribution to the Women's Club. Mr. H. P. Ford moVed in that direction. In dping so, he said that it was with reluctance that they were forced to take this stfep, hut there was no other way out. He considered that the position should be placed before the Unemployment Board and that a statement setting out the amount Of relief contributed locally should also be shbmifted. Mrs Davidson said that the club was in the same position as the committee. It had spent its resources and could", not see its way to approach thejntb^ lic for further funds. The motion was carried and it was decided to embody in the resolutioii, a statement of the work carried out by the committee, and the extent of the local contribution given by' the public.
