CAPTAIN DE GROOT'S ACTION INTENDED TO BELITTLE STATE PREMIER MAGISTRATE'S JUDGMENT

Rec. April 6, 11 p.m. SYDNEY, Wednesday. Captain de Groot was convicted and fined £5 to-day on a charge of bffensive behaviour. (The stipendiary Magistrate, Mr. Laidlaw, said the defendant's action really had the approval of the New Guard movement. The whole incident had been pre-arranged, and was cjesigned to interfere with a public ceremony conducted by the Government of the State. The offenee had been aggravated, he continued, by the fact that it was intended to belittle the Premier bf the State, for whom other disrespect was shown. No person or organisatidn had any right to interfere or interrupt proceedings of this riature, as it might lead to other disturbances, breaches of the peace, and possibly a riot. * The maximttm fine of £5, would be imposed.
