AMATEUR BOXING

i ROTORUA TOURNEY SEVERAL WILLING CONTESTS AT SYLVANA STADIUM ROTORUA BOY'S SUCCESS The second stage of the Rotorua Gymnastic Club's Easter tournament was reaehed on Saturday evening when the preliminary contests in the boxing seetion were decided. Once again the attendance was disappointing, notwithstanding the fact that a very excellent programme was provided. The bouts staged by the elub proved that some very useful material could be drawn upon for amateur sport and, taken all together, the display was well worthy of much stronger support from the public. There was plenty of variety and a spirit of youthful lceenness prevailed throughout. Mr. Neil McLean, of Auckland, acted as referee. The printed programme was not strictly followed, but the following contests (four rounds of two-minp,i^ea each) were decided: — School Boys

ihere was no ofncial contest in this seetion, but Ewert and Shooter opened the proceedings with a capital three-round display aftd fought wfijt a zeal which won frequent applause. Both youngsters showed considerable promise. There was no decision. Featherweights F. Parsons (Auckland), 9.4 met N. Way (Auckland), 9.2, in a contest which opened with great vigour. Both j men gave and toolc considerable punishment. Swings to the face, which, frequently landed, were scored by both men. In the third round Parsons appeared to tire more than his opponent, but Way failed to follow up good advantages. The fourth round was in favour of Way, who got the verdict. A. Spragg (Auclcland), 9.0 pret Allen (Auckland), 9.0 in a bout which had "very pleasing f eatures. Spragg was a determined, plucky fighter and made the pace most of the way, but Allen had the advantage of reach and was remarkably light on his feet. His left to the face piled up the points in his favour a- lot and he got the verdict. Fly-Weights I. Hogg, 8.5 and A. Dreaver, 9,6, both of Auckland, met in a hard-hit-ting four rounds. There was no outstanding merit in the contest beyond the ability to give ahd take- punishment about the head and face. Dreaver had a slight advantage throughout and was declared the winner. Light-Weights The contest between M. Whiti (Rotorua), 9.0 and W. Hogg (Auckland), 9.0 was disappointing for the supporters of the local man. He was out-classed from the start and could not stand up to his punishment. After smothering his way through the second round he "threw in the toweb" Welter-Weights A. Warbrick (Rotorua) and Berrell (Birmingham), both 10.0 met in

a sensational four rounds during. which anything might have happened. "Brunning," as he was so.on ealled,. sailed into his man with a wild windmill attack that took no heed of punishment a^nd lasted uptil nearly the finish. But Warbtick was the more capable boxer and steadily scored poipts. fle had secured a good lead in the final round and had his opponent smothering on the ropes when the gong. sounded. Middle-Weights I There was. real p.liigghRg ih the four rounds between G. Farmer (Te Arp.ha), 11.7 apd J. Shadboft (Auckland), li.6. The first three rounds were just solid ha,r^ hjtfing on both sides. Farmer persistently connected with his left to the face and had a little the best of if ip. the early stages, but in the final rq^pd Shadbolt handed out a lot of punishment and secured the verdict. Light Heavy-Weight R. S. Shadbolt, 12.0, v. H. Neale, 12.2, both of Auckland, met in an ordinary four pound plug. There were no outstanding features in the contest beyond some oeeasional sn^art cross-countering ip which Neale showed to the best advantage. He was slightly quiekpr than bi,s opponent and secured the verdict. The result of the contest between S. Hogg (Rotorua), 12.2 and T. Chandler (Okoroire), 11.10, was unexpected as in the early stages Chandler showed up tp distinct advantage. He pasted Hogg well and took a lot of the hard retiprns on his gloves, b,ut in the tbird, ropnd the local' tpan settlpd down to business in parnest and eaply in th,p r,o.und Chapdler went down for eight and in the final round he took a sim, ilar rest and Hogg obtained a pop.ular vprdict.

Feather-Weight FinaJ One. final contest was added to the prpgrapime. This wa.s fhe fgatherweight, in which S. Allen, 9.0, and A. Dreaver, 9,0., b.p.th of Auckland, fought a brislc four rounds. The lads wepe very evenly matched. Allen again displayed good footwork and made effpctive use of his left, but he lacked power in his punches. Dreaver was a more rugged and determined fighter and was constantly on the attack. Allen held the advantage at the start, but he sought the mat fpr eight in the third round and from then on Dreaver put on the points and gained the decision. The rest of the finals will be decided this evening as preliminaries to the professional light heavy-weight contest between Jipi Broadfoot and Tommy Mclnnis.
