In the face of the declaration by the President, Mr. Jlerber^ "Ijfoovef, that the Budget must be balanced, the House of Representatives following b, two.-hour heated deb.at?, $q$eated by 216 votes to 132 votes the amendment to the Revenue Bill legalising 2.75 per cent beer for the purpose of raising £70,000,000 revenue, the opponbnts to the amendment shouting: "The nation cannot drink itsfff into prosperity." / The proponents of the amendment, /alcing advantage of the situation for a general debate on prohibition, stated their arguments of inereased crime, reduced temperance etc. The defeat of the amendment makes the formulation of new taxes necessary. The possibility of inereased taxes bank cheque taxation and the revival of the war time nuisance tax, such as theatre tickets and other luxuries.
