SHORTBREAD.

One pound flour (sifted), Jlb butter, Goz sugar, 1 teaspoonful salt, 1 teaspoonful baking powder. Mix all ingredients together, rubbing the butter well in. When thoroughly mixed, knead into one piece, turn on to a board and worlc out to desired thickness (about ik-inch) with hands, lceeping mixture in a round shape. Smooth over with rolling pin, cut into squares, prick with f ork, , and pinch edges. Place on cold slide and bake in slow oven till a pale brown. Leave on shelf till quite cold.
