SHOOTING SEASON

LIBERATION OF CHINESE RING-NECK PHEASANTS IN DISTRICT MALLARD OPEN THIS YEAR About 150 Chinese ring-neck pheasants have been liberated throughout the Rotorua district to date and others will be given their freedom as the birds are available, according to Mr. A. Kean, Conservator of Fish and Game for the Rotorua Acclimatisation area. The shooting season opens on May 2 and extends until June 30, both days inclusive. Among the imported and native game open for shooting this season are cock pheasants, Californian quail, Virginian quail, Australian quail, malTard duck, gray duck, spoonbill duck and black swan. The mallard duck was protected last season but has been added to the "open" list' for this year. Another item of interest to sportsmen is the announcement that from February 1 to March 31, 1933, an open season has been declared throughout the Rotorua district including the Opotiki county, for the talcing or killing of the native god- ! wit and knat. These birds, however, • may only be shot subject to certain i conditions laid down in the license.
