CONSTRUCTOR'S TRIBUTE TO WORKMAN'S GALLANT DEED WHEN STAGING CAUGHT FIRE Mr. L. Ennis, constructional cng;neer in charge of the Harbcur Bridge, described to a Sydney Rotcry Club luncheon "The bravest thi ig that ever happened." An engineei-, sceptical of the ^trength of the bridge during er^ction, had said to him: "Wait till you get one of our 60-mile-an-hour we.sterlies." Mr. Ennis went on: — "Only a few nights before we ciosed the arch, along came a 65-mile-an-hour gale. All the materlal that could he carried away that night went into the harbour, and one of our men — Jack Harris — did one of the bravest things that ever happened. "One of the portable furnaces ilted over, and hot cinders fell on Ihe oil-soaked wooden scaffolding a id caught fire. Harris, in the howliug ga'e. crawled along the arch and with a krefe cut the ropes holding the huge stag'ng and let the blazing mass fall into the harbour."
