In making its recomhiendation the committee advances ' • the following reasohs: — - ; (1) It would promote temperance and -decreasecrime. The beer would be non-intoxie.ating. • (2) Xt would give employment to probably 1,000,000 persons. • One huridred thousand farmers could derive profit from growing between 6*0,000,000 and 120,000,000 bushels of the necessary barley. (3) The tax yield from the beer solif wouid be from £69,400,000 to £160, 000,060. (4) Hotels and restaurants could recapture business n'ow diverted to sly-grog shops.
