N.Z. Independence.
The almost-contemptuous independence of certain New Zealanders was well illustrated in the Matamata court recently, when, following a question by counsel as to whether witness expected to be believed, defendant replied sturdily, if perhaps unthinkingly: "I am not asking anyone to believe me." The magistrate smiled. N.Z. Transport. Every form of transport with the exception of aerial services figures in the list of more than 1550 mail services in New Zealand published in a special Gazette issued recently. The mail contracts vary from a few shillings a year up to more than £500, and packhorses, gigs, handearts, launches, and trams are included in the numerous conveyances used for delivery. Relief Workers' Achlevements. "Many people think that the relief | workers are a gang of loafers," said ! a member of a deputation to the j Wanganui Unemployment Committee. There was a hig job being carried out at Castlecliff, which was stated to he ! breaking records, he added. Several other members also said that the relief i workers were doing good work and ! that the engineers were satisfied. [ Hoxneless Cars. In Wellington eity, it is stated by the municipal authorities, there are 80Q motor-cars which are parked in the streets all night because they havo not got a roof to cover their heads. Their owners sleep in their warm heds, but leave their trusty cars out in the cold and wet, unsheltered, forlorn, all, all alone, and expect them i there all safe iri the morning, waiting for them. Naturally the civic authoi rities are now proposing to put a ! stop to this casual way with cars, and are setting a limit to all-niglit parldng practice; it must cease; the owners must find garages for their vehicles. The car owner has hecome so accustomed to the idea that the puhlic streets are his to do as he pleases with that the couneil's decision has come as an unpleasant shock, and he is asking how on earth is he to find aceommodation.
