ORCHARD THIEVES ROUTED

"Thus conscience does make cowards of us all." The old tag was amusingly borne out in a little unrehearsed scene enacted in a Woodville orchard during the week-end. The orchard is attached to a house and contains a fine old pear tree, the ripening fruit of which is the pride of th'eir owner, a woman of somewhat small stature. She was horrified to see a determined raid being made by two men.in the heavily-laden boughs. Hoping to scare them off she banged a window. The intruders beat a hasty retreat to the roadside where they commencqd an al fresco luncheon off the proceeds of their enterprise. This aroused; the wrath of their owner, and she made a sally, only to see two more men drop from the tree, with their pockets hulging. The four men watched the approach of the diminutive but warlike figure and then, deeming discretion to be the better part of valour, fled ignominiously down the road, leaving a somewhat breathless but triumphant woman. on the field of victory.
