POPE AND DUCE
"BEAUTIFUL AUDIENCE" IS SIGNOR MUSSOLINI'S DESCRIPTION LONDON, Wednesday. A "beautiful audience," is how the. Italian Prime Minister (Signor Mussolini) repeatedly described to Vatican officials his meeting with the Pope. The Pope and the Prime Minister parted with smiles, says the Rome correspondent of "The Times," Signor Mussolini holding a case of gold medals, a gift from the Pope. Thereafter, Signor Mussolini, with Cardinal Pacelli, and an escort of scarlet-clad officials, went in a picturesque procession to St. Peter's, took holy water from the Cardinal's hand, and knelt in prayer before the altar of the Madonna. There an incident oecurred which greatly pleased the Papal authorities. Signor Mussolini rebuked pressmenwho attempted to photograph him while he knelt, saying, "No! When one is praying, he should not be photographed." The Prime Minister's eavalcade included ten mounted Carabinieri galloping before his motor car. The . Pope specially permitted them to enter the Yatican City. The meeting set the seal on the restoration of peace between Church and State in Italy, and was the climax to 12 months' negotiations on the relations of the Church to the State. Signor Mussolini gave the Fascist salute to the Pope, then knelt and kissed the Papal ring.
