YOUNG MAN PLEADS GtJILTY TO CHARGE OF ROBBING COLLECTION BOX ARRESTED BY VICAR

AUCKLAND, Monday. Detained in the vestfy of St. Mary's Cathedral at Parnell, yesterday, by Canon Farcourt, and later hande-d over to the police, Clarence Albert Butterfield, aged 29 years, a eabinetmaker, was charged with stealing £1 1/6 from the collection box in the Cathedral. The verger, Mr. W. Hickmott, helieved that ;the mission boxes placed in the Cathedral were being tampered with, so he returned to the Cathe.dral about I p.m. yesterday. Five minutes after he arrived hq saw a yonng niari enter by the southern door and tampei* with one of the collection boxeq. He accosted Butterfield, and called upon Canon. Faricourt who \yas riearby. Canon Faricourt detained Butterfield ih the vestry until the poiice arrived. The mission box was found .operi, and pai't of the lock brokeri. It was empty. . When Butterfield appeared in the Police Court to-day, he pleaded guilty. , "This mari has also stolen from Stf Stephen's Church, and it is Also afieged that he stole Ganori Fancourt's attache case/' said DetectiveSergeant Kelly in obtainihg a remand until jMarch 31. .
