LARGE TYRE

PAIR WEIGH ALMOST AS MUCH AS BABY CAR. What is believed to be the largest pneumatic tyre in the world for road use has recently fieen. produced by the Dunlojp Co., England. It is a lowpressure type for commercial vehicles, and has a diameter of 51ins and a width of 151 inches. The load capacity is 4tons 14 • cwts per tyre, or 9 tons 8cwt per axle. Two of these tyres weigh almost as mueh as a 7 h.p. Baby car. The inflation pressure is in the region of 1001b per sq. inch, so when the huge loads which this tyre has to carry are taken into consideration, it will be realised how very low the" pressure is. The object of low pressure is to obviate vibration caused by road irregularities, to give inereased comfort to passengers, and to reduce damage to chassis, body and goods carried.
