NOT DETECTIVES
OFFICIALS OF SYDNEY'S TELEPHONE SERVICE. SYDNEY, Saturday. According to the Superintendent of Telephones, so many Sydney hushands and wives have used the department's nnofficial secret service to measure the nnknown s'de of an eternal triangle, that an ultimatum has gone forth forhidding the disclosure of the nature of subscribers' conversations, except under special eircumstances. "We are not divorce detectives," said the superintendent. The department maintains an ohservation staff, whose duty it is to "listen in." This is done to test the efficiency of the wires, and also to checlc conversations. All lines are tapped periodically — some when requested hy the police; others when the department have reason to believe the 'phone is being misused. These ui^suspected Iisteners :take shorthand notes of conversations when necessary. Bad language, threats, and that sort of thing is forbidden over the 'phone, as well as through the post.
