HAWKE CUP SELECTION

ANOTHER

_ CRITIC.

(To the Editor). Sir, — -Your eorrespondent, "Fansy," agrees that Godsalve and Hcrding must be included, but would like to see Wallis and Sutherland in place of Beale and Hampson. "Pan.-y" makes no attempt to answer my criticism that Wallis is a poor field and a batsrnan whose lack of defence is revealed by his consistently low scoring. "Pansy" says my defence of the boys is not "convincing" ; but he cannot refute the fact that the H gh School boys have batted more "convincingly" than any Rotorua bi.tsmen, and altogether more "conviacingly" than elther Wallis or Sutherland. The suggestion of Sutherland has been made by Pansy with his tongue in his cheek; it hardly calls for an answer. With six bowlers of the same type as Sutherland in the team — Lenihan, Lyons, Wells, Broberg, York and Peebles — why choose a seventh ? Obviously it is the batting that has. to be strengthened, and while Sutherlands hitting may be powerful when it connects with the ball unfortunately a reference to the score boolc shows that the ball more frequently connects with the stumps. If Pansy is serious in suggesting that Sutherlands batting form this season shows that he is likely to make more runs than Beale or Hampson, then I can only refer him to the score hook. This will show that each of the boys has made to date round about 400 runs at an average of between 40 and 50. Sutherland has scored about 60 If Pansy seriously thinks that Walruns at an average of under 10. lis and Sutherland have earned the right to replace Beale and Hampson as better batsmen, I would suggest that Pansy should make a proper. Job of his selection; include Burton and McGill (who have been of more use to their club than Wallis and Sutherland) in place of Godsalve and Harding, and so have the five Rotorua members of the team worthy representatives of their Albion Club. — I am. etc.
