COUNTY COUNCIL
REGULAR MEETING The regular monthly meeting of the Rotorua County Couneil was held yesterday. There were present, Crs. H. P. Ford (in the, chair) , J. Smythe, A. L. Keith, W. Steele, and R. Copeland Smith. Mr. J. W. Cochrane, Ohau Channel, Lake Rotorua, wrote submitting for the council's approval, a scheme plan of a proposed sub-division of the Ohau-Taupiri block. It was decided to request Mr. Cochrane to submit a further plan showing slightly larger seetions. It was pointed out that the Couneil had set up a minimum of a quarter acre in the case of subdivisions, and the clerk reported tb.at Mr. Cochrane had intimated his w.llingness to bring his plan into line with this requirement. A letter was received from Mr. John Savage, Poroporo, making application for the Council's assistance in providing a road from Mr. Brett's property at Rerewhakaitu to Roto'mahana. Mr. Savage pointed out that he had paid rates for some years, and asked whether the Couneil could see its way to make available the necessary labour for earrying out the work. The matter was left in the hands of the engineer to select suitable men for the work and make the necessary arrangements. New Zealand Perpetual Forests, limited, Putaruru, wrote applying for permission to carry overweight loads on the two-ton lirnit bridge on the Atiamuri Road. It was decided to refuse the necessary permission, as it was considered that the bridge was not safe for overweight loads. The treasurer reported that receipts since the last meeting of the Couneil had amounted to £1573 9s 6d. General rates received had totalled £152, and arrears collected to £102 16s 3d. Special rates totalled £105 10s 3d, and arrears of special rates £61 19s 4d. Total receipts for the current year had reached £19,749 11s 4d, the report stated, and the credit in the County fund amounted to £2115 13s 8d. The credit in the loans account was £1569 ls 3d. Accounts totalling £1546 17s lOd were passed for payment which when brought to charge showed the toial expenditure for the current year as £19,481 2s lld. The engineer, Mr. T. S. Robertson, reported that the contract for the Ngongotaha street improvements had been completed and approximately 10 chains of the bottom course on the Okere-Hamurana Road had been completed. Thp grader had been working on the Tauranga road searifying and forming up. The tunnel under the dry bridge had been excavated for 50 £eet. There had been 77 applications to date for men under the No. 5 unemployment scheme, and last week, 100 men had been employed on farm work. The report was adopted. 1
