FEE CUTTING
SYDNEY LAW INSTITUTE • CANNOT CHECK PRACTICE. SYDNEY, Saturday. Fee cutting, particularly in cases that come before suburban courts, has added to the woes of solicitors, many of whom are already finding it difficult to make a living; They say that there is no remedy, and that the Law Institute is practically powerless. It is said that the cost of legal representation in the police courts is cheaper to-day than for years past, the reduetion being 25 per cent. to 75 per cent. Two years ago it would have been difficult to find a solicitor willing to appear in court for less than £2 2s. Many wanted £5 5s, and those with large police court connections charged/ anything from £10 10s to 50 guineas. Now solicitors are taking cases for as iow' as £1 ls, or even 10s 6d. If Mrs. Brown has a quarrel with her backdoor neighhour she can now secure a solicitor, who will hurl mud at Mrs. Blaclc for a couple of hours for a guiliea. Old-established solicitors are hitterly critical of this practice of the younger members of the profession.
