UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF.
FAIR
GO.
(To the Editor).
Sir, — Will you allow me space in your columns to protest against the way* the local unemployment committee is cutting down the relief worker's pay, and the unfair way in which it is done. I know of three families, all with one child. Two of these are paying house rent while the third is living rent free with friends. The two men who pay rent have both had their pay cut, while the man who nays no rent still stands at the £1 17s 6d. Perhaps the officer responsible for this can give us some %xplanation, and advise them as to the best way to live on less than £1 17s 6d. One of these families have cut out the electric light, and have not tasted meat since Christmas, and if this sort of thing goes on will have to shift out of the house and find a batch out of town or go into a tent. They tell us the Government is short of funds. To my mind this is straying a long way from facts, and one has only to look over the racecourse for the proof. If they have hundreds to waste in that way, they are not short. — I am, etc.
