LOCAL AND GENERAL

Bishop of Waiapu at Whakatane i A garden party was held iu Mrs. Ramson's spacious grounds on ihe 1 occasion of the visit to Whakatane of the Bishop of Waiapu, Bishop 'Wil- : liams, under the auspices of the St. George's Church Ladies' Guild and vestfy- The party was well attend- : ed, ! and proved very successful. In the beautiful grounds many games were iridulged in, including tennis, clock golf and croquet. Afernoon tea was served on the verandah and everything possible was done for the comfort and entertainment of the guests. Northern Hospitality The people of the' Far North have always been noted for their hospitality, a characteristie common to most isolated distri'cts such as the North was until eomparatiyely recently. Now excellent motor roads criss-cross the northern peninsular from end to end and tourists visit the district in increasing numbers annually. This, however, has not lessened the people's hospitable reception to tbe straxlger, and a party of motorists from Rotorua who have returned from an extensive tour are most enthusiastic in their praises of the treatinent they received wherever they went. Mamaku Hill Deviation The practice of allowing uncompleted road deviation work to remain unfenced is particularly dangerous and deceiving to motorists using the main route over the Mamaku hills at the present time. This danger was impressed on a "Post" representative who travelled over the hill last Sunday evening. The deviation in most cases branehes oif from the road at the corners of the existing highway, thus giving drivers unused to the road the impression that it continues straight ahead. Unless this danger is rectified by the authority responsible for the work, the Main Highway s | Board, the time is not far distant | when some unfortunate motorist will j take the wrong track and eome to ' grief at the bottom of one of the many gullies which are being filled in. Deer-Stallcing Licenses. Recently a suggestion was niade by the Rotorua Rod and (Sun Club to the Department of Internal Affairs advocating the setting apart of an area of bush in the vicinity of Te Teko for which deer stalking licenses could be issued at £1 a head. The club made the suggestions with a view to restricting to some extent the present destruction of the deer herds which is proceeding under the open season. The Department, however, has indicated that it does not propose to alter the existing arrangements.
