SHOW BUILDING

H. M.

MARTIN.

Sir, — The question of erecting a building for the purpose of housing the A. and P. Association's Winter Showin, is evidently arousing conside.rable interest. Your leading article of the 2nd inst., censured those who voted for deferring the erection of a building for 12 months, and extoled the attitude of Mr. J. D. Davys in characterising those who opposed his motion as a collection of pessimists does not appear to be well grounded. That gentleman is not in a good position to criticise, in so far that he has in the past taken little interest in show matters and no resnonsibility in assisting to bring about the present strong financial position of the association. The report of the meeting, which appeared in the "Morning Post" of the 1st inst., was, in my opinion, a httle one-sided. SmalL mention was ma.de of the views expressed by the farmers present, who, after all, are the ones who can make a show possible, and were not disposed to sink a large amount of capital in a building which, if delayed for a year or two, probably could have been erected for one-third less cost. In aslcing the association to assist in bolstering up an uneconomic position in building at the present time when costs of materials are too high when compared with what we are receiving for our primary exports, and still to attempt to maintain this position is unsound. The sooner materials are brought down to a level at which they can be profitably used, the greater will be the demand, and more employment will result, which will mean greater prosperity to all. Let us all pull together and assist in bwding up our town and district, which is destined to play an important part in developing the inexhaustible wealth contained in our lands. — I am, etc.,

Ngongotaha, 3/3/32.
