EFFICIENCY

MANY VEHICLES DO NOT MEASURE UP TO STANDARD "It is indisputable that a very large number of motor vehicles on the road at any time do not measure up to the efficiency standard clearly defined in the national regulations," says the Canterbury Automobile Association. "The position is not improved at the holiday time by the pressing into use of vehicles which have been laid aside for a time. As long as an engine will start and pull its load many drivers do not worry about other factors which have such an important bearing on safety. It is important to remember that the ability to brixig a car to & stop in a safe and reasonable distance is much more vital than the quCstioft of starting. There is k definite duty on the part of all motoTists to make certain that all brakes are effective on all four Wheels, that steering is without defect, that tyres are right, that wheel nuts are tight, that the lighting system is f unctioning, atld that the warning device is in proper order. So many motorists forget such essential details. It is because of the neglect bf careless motorists that the careful motorist must be even more careful and take no chances. Particularly is this so at the intersections oi* on hill foads or at bends. No matter how right you may be in the observanee of all the rules of motoring you are liable to be inconvenienced by careless drivers who use vehicles .without good brakes and other equipment.
