RUGBY, Wednesday. t Conversations designed to effect an actual cessation oi hostile movements are taking place at Shanghai. Sir John Simon urged upon the Japanese representative at Geneva the necessity for putting an immediate stop to hostilities, and the latter promised to do his utmost to secure a cessation of fighting. Press reports state that a conference attended by the Japanese and Chinese representatives was held to-
mght aboard Admiral Sir Howard Kelly's flagship, H.M.S. Kent. Arrangements are completed at Geneva for a meeting on Thursday, of the League of Nations Assetnbly, which has been speqialjy ponvpnpd to consider the sino-Japanese dispute. The President of the League Council (M. Paul Boncour), in a letter to Captain Sato (Japan), acknowledging the reeeipt of the Japanese acceptance of the council's proposal for an immediate International Conference in Shanghai, points out that these proposals were subject to Iqcal arrangements being made for the cessation of hostilities. The lqttep adds: "The assembly could not begin while the guns were still roaring in the Far East." Captain Sato arranged to see Mr. Boncour later.
