AMATEUR ATHLETICS
FIRST CH AMPION SHIP MEETING HELD ON FRIDAY LAST TEAM FOR AUCKLAND The first club championship meeting under the control of the Rotorua Amateur Athletie and Cycling Club was held on the High School grounds on Friday evening last. A good attendance watched the ten events which were deeided, and some fine finishes were witnessed. While it was not to be expected that the times, recorded would approach the New Zealand standard, some were close enough to indicate that the newly-formed club is making rapid progress, and that next season representation at the New Zealand championships can be confidently ex-. pected. R. Dawson won the 100 yards A grade event in a close finish from A. Lillas, the time recorded being 11 'l-5sec., one second above the standard. The B grade was won in 1.5sec. longer time by H. Steele, A. Cottrell running second. The half-mile cycle rece resulted in M. Bell finishing in front of his brother, P. Bell in, the A grade, and S. Howe beating N. Howe in the second grade, the time in both cases being lmin. 19sec. The ladies' races, which were serving as a final try-out for the selection of the team to engage in the Auckland Provincial championships next Saturday, resulted in M. Ford winning the A grade, E. Corbett the B grade, and C. Cronin the C grade. The ladies' relay race was the most interesting of the evening, and had the baton changing been a little smarter, fast time would have been recorded. The decision went to the Probable team, which, allowing the Possibles 10yds' handicap, won by six yards. The A grade 120 yards hurdles championship was won by J. Robertson by about 10 yards, from. H. Steele, A. Lillas winning the B grade event in 1 3-5sec. better time than that recorded by Robertson. R. Dawson did' not finish in the 440 yards event, and the decision went to A. Lillas, the time being 59sec. The only entrant to face the starter in the three mile race, Dawson, recorded the time of 17min. 49sec. P. Bell turned the tables on his brother in the one mile cycle race, and reserving a good sprint for the finish won in fine style. N. Howe was successful in the B grade from J. McCall. The best men's broad jump of the evening was made by I. Gainsford in the B grade, the distance being 18ft. lin., N, Gainsford winning the A grade with a jump of 17ft. 2ins. The distance recorded by the ladies in the same event were distinctly good, B. Cottrell securing the A grade honour with a jump of 13ft. 5ins., and E. Hardie the second grade with 12ft.
