ING CARNIVAL
BIRTHDAY E7D AXEMEN'S CLUB RES FOR TWO ax MEETING. ING AN'D CYCLING ALSO. xixture which is expected to atct competitors from all over New xealand, and even frora Australia, is the monster two-day sports meeting of the Rotorua Athletie and Axemen's Club, to be held on the Government Garden grounds on June 3 and 4, 1932. Preliminary arrangements have now been made, and programmes sent out to possible competitors in New Zealand and Australia. A party of New Zealand axemen is travelling to Sydney next month to compete in choppink events to be held in connection with the opening of the new Harbour Bridge, and it is anticipated that some Australian champions will return the visit, and will compete at the Rotorua meeting. The prize money totals £306, including nearly £200 for the chopping events, which is the biggest prize money offered for chopping in Australasia. The Northern Athletie Union, with which the local club is affiliated, controls the largest number of organised sports meetings in New Zealand, and this year no fewer than 60 meetings are being held under its control between January and the end of March. All competitors are fully controlled by the Union, and spectators are assured of good sport. For the King's Birthday meeting at Rotorua, official handicappers have been ajppointed by the Union, and are as follows: — Chopping, Mr. Charles TJHardy (Auckland); running, Mr. F. McAneny (Auckland) ; cycling, Mr. C. Morrison (Te Aroha). All the competitors must send in their last two years' performances; or, if these are not available, their last three starts. To eliminate all possible argument in the standing chop events, automatic judges have been arranged for, which record the exact moment when the different blocks fall. Automatic judges are a comparatively new thing in Australia, those to be used for the Rotorua meeting having been made locally by Mr. C. Pepper. The Government Garden running track is described as a first-class one, and the cycle track, which is carefully cut and rolled, is said to compare favourably with any in New Zealand. In view of the fact that 200 competitors are expected, this meeting should prove very valuable to Rotorua, and coming in the middle of winter, as it does, should give business a deeided fillip. Nominations for the chopping events close with the secretary, Mr E. C. Sherman, on May 21, and for the track events on May 25, handicayc for all events being published in thi • "Morning Post," and the Aucklam newspapers on Saturday, May 28, Membership tickets, which carry al the usual privileges, are now available, and can be obtamed from Mr Sherman, c.o.
