Some little time ago the British Home OfRce, recognising that London suburbs, where in some cases population had increased fourfold, were not adequately policed, sanctioned a scheme for transferring police from central to subuiban areas. Already hundreds of transfers have been made, and the vacaneies thus caused in central divisions are being filled by recruits. At the same time, in districts where crime has shown a marked increase, the detective branch has been greatly strengthened, and outlying areas are now regularly patrolled day I and night by the "Flying Squad" in i motor-cars, and also by members of | the mobile police. These units have i been very successful in capturing crii minals who use motor-cars in getting J away from the scene of their crimes.
