BOWLING
pairs tournament ROTORUA CLUB OPENS SECOND TOURNAMENT OF SEASON. TWENTY-TWO ENTR1ES. The seeond tournament of the Rotorua Bowling Club opsxied yesterday in very pleasant weather. Owing to the recent rain the greens were just on the heavy side., but with sunshine and a pleasant breeze prevailing, it is anticipated that they will beeome keen before the termination of play. There are 22 entries, with two sections of 11 each. Competitors are playing three games of 21 heads each day and the finalists will be decided by post-section play. The entries came from all over the North Island and one team has entered from Nelson. In welcoming the players in the morning, Mr. T. Kelly, president of the Rotorua Club, expressed disappointment at the fact that hard times [prevented a full rink tournament being held, but they had found it possible to run a pairs tournament, and he was glad to welcome players and see so many old friends among them. It was gratifying to see such a number of entries from other clubs and he mentioned with pleasure the fact that a team had come from as far away as Nelson. The Gisborne pair, Messrs. Cameron and Blackburn had some unpleasant experiences on their motor trip over for the tournament. When about 40 miles on the journey from Gisborne they met with engine trouble and were compelled to spend Sunday night in their car on the roadside. They managed to get to Opotiki about 2 o'clock on Monday and notified Rotorua of their progress. Arrangements were made for Messrs. McDowell and Tyson to play in their plade and the missing players turned up towards the end of the day. The substitutes will retire from to-day's play and Messrs. Cameron and Blackburn will take their delayed part in .the tournament. Two greens are in occupation by 12 rinks. Results of the first day's play" are as follows: —
