NORFOLK ISLAND
DEPRESSION CAUSES DECLINE IN TOURIST TRAFFIC TRADE WITH DOMINION Rec. Feb. 22, 9.55 p.m. SYDNEY, Monday. . Mr. A. J. Bennett, the Administrator of Norfolk Island, in his annual report, says that Norfolk Island felt the effects of tbe depression with tbe loss of tourist traffic from Australia and New Zealand, arid the loss of the trade in bauanas with Australia, where locally-grpwn bananas are keenly competing. JTowever, there is increased trade with New Zealand, to which 1.1,812' cases of bananas were exported last year, and this offsets the loss with Austi'alia. The Administrator looks forward to increased tourist traffic with New Zealand as the result of the steamer Morinda repia cing the Malcamho. Also the development of tne vegetable and fruit trade with the Dominion by reason of the establishment of regular services. The population of the island is now ' 992, consisting of 545 males and 447 females. The deaths occurred during the year of three of the original Pitcairn Islanders, Henry Buffet, aged 84 years; Edith Adams, 78 yeai's; and Emily Young, 76 years, while only five survived to celebrate June 8, 1931, which, was the 75th anniversary of their landing on Norfolk Island; Anne Quintal, aged 93 years; Cornelius Quintal, 90 years; Rachel Taylor, 82 years; George Christian, 78 years; and Marianne Buffet, 75 years.
