RACING NOTES AND FORM PROSPECTS

TODAY'S MEETING PROSPECTS FOR RICCARTON TE RAPA AND FORBURY TROTS SOME GOOD FIELDS Specially Written for the "Post by "The Judge." The main galloping event in the north to-day and on Monday is that of the Waikato Racing Club at its big Te Rapa course. ,The fields for to-day's programme are very good and there will be some fine racing. The track should be in excellent order, with the sting taken out as a result of the rain last week-end. In the opening event, the smallest field for years will be seen in action. This is the Trial Stakes, which in the past has drawn two-division fields. Now there are but ten acceptors. Marmorate finished a good second at Takapuna when badly drawn, and the Avondale maiden and King's Knave, Aga Khan and Amber Link have all shown speed. They could be faneied as named. The Frankton Hurdles is a good field, although not an easy one to sum up. Standfast has only to improve on his second at Matamata, his first attempt over the battens. Te Homai has been galloping well at Te Awamutu, and Cristobel is only waiting for easy tracks. This trio will be in demand, together with Wiltshire.

A Good Field One, of the best fields of the day will be seen in action in the Juvenile Handicap, and Tea Trader, with all his weight, deserves to be the elect of backers. Sea Ruler and Gay Marigold may be his most dangerous opponents, with the Rotorua winner Welcome Lu, also a prospect. There are several other promising youngsters engaged and they may spring a surprise. Pegaway is by no means out of the Storey Memorial Cup with his ten stone, for he finished' third not so long ago with 10.1 in much better company. Chief Joy is handsomely treated and if he can stay he might win. Eager Rose failed rather badly the second day at Takapuna, but for which she would be expected to run prominently on this course. Royal Artist is a good three-year-old that has been racing unluckily. There are several fair sorts farther down, notably Mosque, Limeen and Alloy. However, Chief Joy, Pegaway and Royal Artist appeal most, with Eager Rose and Alloy given good chances if they are handled right and run up to form. The Linley Hack Lucidus has been jworking brilliantly at Te Awamutu of late, and he is rightly placed to go well in the Linley Hack. The Rotorua winner, Teels, may go on winning now that she has started for there is no. denymg her speed. Ganpat is a good one and well up to weight. This trio are greatly fancied, while there are possibilities about Holly Holm, Genrata, Lady Musk and Welcome Boy. If Gay Cockade reproduces his Ellerslie track form, he will be hard :o beat in the Puketaha High-weight, ;n which event his most dangerous opponents may be Te Hoia and Hit ihe Deck. Paganelli's Chance A really fine field is left ,in the ^print, the President's Handicap. In view of Paganelli's recent good form ihe handicapper appears to have tak3n a risk with him, and on this roomy lourse, his home track by the way, he has a royal chance. Nevertheless there are several improving sprint\rs just below him, notably High Comedy and Chief Jewel, and this trio uromises to make it a very interesting contest. Given a soft track, Paganelli ?ould be washed out and Leitrim would then be the first selection. Marechal, Gold Day and Tea Chat are other fine sprinters. Beerescourt Hack To-day's bill of fare will conclude with the Beerscourt Hack. Several of the nine have chances and there should be good speculation on the event. This is L'Allegro's favourite track, and that weighs heavily in rac'ng, so that he is expected to add to his Te Rapa record. Valmarie will i'nd this track better than those she has been racing on lately, for here the stayer has every chance. Princess Bede, Gay Idea, Pateena and Lady Lulu all possess prospects, but perhaps the issue will be confined to L'Allegro, Valmarie and Pateena. Racing at Riccarton Counter March and Babel, who had such a thrilling duel the last day in the Higjh-weight at Trentham the latter winning by a head, will again meet in the Hornby Handicap at Riccarton to-day, at the one-day fixture of the Canterbury Jockey Club, and this time Counter March may reverse the placings. Night Guard and The Viscount read best in the Trial Stakes, and Silver Ring stands right out in the Middle Parlc Plate, with Hilary, a Trentham winner, the pick of the other two and three-year-olds. Cricket Bat's Wingatui^ form, second in the sprint and winner of the Hazlett Gold Cup, entitles him to pride of place in the Midsummer Handicap, but he may find it difficult to concede weight to Black Duke, with Locksley and Martian Chief likely to race well behind this pair. If Oratorious is reserved for the tv/o-year-old handicap event, the Lyttelton Plate, he will be a good favourite, and in the event of his being an absentee, Topthorn and Fine Weather may prove to be the best. However there is very little form to go upon outside of Oratorious. The Craven Plate Quite a good field remains in the Craven Plate, with Spoon heading the list. She has a solid weight, but her Ellerslie form was good. Spoon, Assemble and Prineess Argosy will go well. There is a large field engaged in' the Halswell Handicap, in which Royal Amphora, Niggerhead and The Quorn will be heavily supported, while the best of those engaged in the concluding race,' the Fost Handi-

cap, may be Minerval, Kaitara and Ball Dress. Auckland Trots Good fields will be seen in action at Alexandra Park, Epsom, to-day, at the opening of the Auckland Trotting Club's February meeting. The following horses will come in for good support in their respective engagements to-day : — Trial Handicap : — Bessie Parrish, Zanzibar, Mattie Herbilwyn.Waiheke Handicap: — Pegaway, Free Logan, Prince Etawah. Otahuhu Handicap : — Auto Machine, Impromptu, Nelson Tasker. Papakura Handicap: — Dan Direct, Bingen Crest, Kewpie's Triumph. Mt. Albert Handicap : — Great Fame, Oliver Thorpe, Gumdigger. February ' Handicap : — Paradigm, Kolmar. Moss Davis Handicap : — Kewpie's Guy, Great Ballin, Dan Direct, Railway Handicap: — Our Peter, Poi, Rey de Quest.
