ROADS AND LIGHTS
BRIGHT ENTRANCE TO BATHS AND GOVT. GARDENS PROVIDED RELIEF WORK ALLOCATED At the meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council last night the Works Comnrittee recommended: (a) That one powerful light he mstalled in Hinemoa Street on the p.orth side, half-way between the entrance to the Government Gardens and Hinemaru Street; and also that it be a suggestion to the Tourist Department that the efficiency of the lights at the entrance to the Government Gardens in Hinemoa Street fhould be increased. (b) That Mr. Robert Kirk and other petitioners be advised that ow'ng to the financial stringency it was not possible to bitumenise the road.vays and footpaths as suggested by them, but that instructions had been given that the use of pumice was to be discontinued; also that they be "urther advised that if they were prenared to assist the council by supply"ng oil, thp council would undertake '0 lay same. (c) That the following works be out in hand in the order enumerated, as relief work under No. 5 scherne: — Straightening* Ranolf Street, south nde, between Pukuatua and Arawa Streets; reforming the following atreets between Amolria and Ranolf Streets: Eruera Street, Pukuatua Street, Haupapa Street, Amohau Street (north side) ; formation of vack on effluent main reserve; re"orming Pererika Street footp\ath; 'ormation of cycle track, Pererika Street. Cr. E. T. Johnson said the reason "or the new light was that the street vas rrsed largely by visitors to the baths and grounds and that it would belp to brighten up the street. It was ao question of an additional light "or Brent's. The Mayor (Mr. T. Jackson) enlorsed this statement. A large light ■■t the intersection would not light I10 footpaths near the gates. Cr. G. Urquhart said there was also u'gent need for an additional light it the Arawa Street entrance, and be Mevor pomted out that the Works Jommittee could make provision for his light in next year's estimate. Cr. Johnson, as chairman of the Works Committee, declared that he "ould go as far as to say that the ighting of the town could, with adrantage, be increased 100 per cent. Te thought the department should be approached to try and secure an 'djustment. The report as a whole was adopted.
