CALCUTTA, Wednesday. A furiousj battle took place at Tarpur, in the Monghyr district, between the police and Congressmen, resultingv in heavy casualties. ■ Mr. Edward* Lee, District Magistrate, and Mr. W. McGrath, Superintexident of Police, were visiting Tarpur t'o dicuss the situation and unrest with the local police officials. While the conference was proceeding Congressmen. arrived and made a desperate attack on the police station. The police stoutly defended the station against a mob, which was thousands strong, and eventually fired'into the crowd and eharged. Eight men are dead and. eight in a critical eondition, while on the police side the District "Magistrate, the Superintendent of Police-, and 24 police were injured by bricks and other missiles.
