SHOT AT GOVERNOR
WOULD-BE WOMAN ASSASSIN SENT TO GAOL FOR NINE YEARS NO PERSONAL GRUDGE CALGUTTA, Tuesday. Bina Das, aged 21, a woman graduate, pleaded guilty and was sentenced by a special tribunal to nine years' rigorous imprisonment for firing at Sir F. Stanley Jackson, Governor of Bengal, at Calcutta on February 6. The woman declared she had no personal grudge against the Governor, but she had against the system of repression he represented. A cable message from Calcutta on February 6, said: "An attempt to assassinate the Governor of Bengal, Sir F. Stanley Jackson, was made by a woman graduate of the Diocesan College. His Excellency was addressing a convocation at Calcutta University, when the woman deliberately fired four or five shots at him. He bent low and was not hurt, the bullets striking the wall behind him. The assailant was Bina Das. She hails from Chittagong. She is an Anglican missionary student, and was due for her degree. When the woman was searched a packet of poison was found concealed in her clothing. The Governor continued his address after the arrest of the woman.
