* Tax on Push Bicycles? Should there be a special -tax on pedal bicycles ? This has recently been suggested as easy way of raising money. It has actually been tried in Guefrisey, where for some years every owner of a biccyele had to pay half a crown annually for the privilege "of using it. Paper numhers were issued to the cyclists when the tax was paid, and were affixed to the back of the machine. As the paper on which the numbers were printed was a different colour each year, there was an automatic check on whether the payment had been duly made. A very large number of people still ride bicycles in Britain, especially in the rural districts, and even a small tax might yield a considerable amount. Nothing to Grumble At The tourist traffic on the Lake Road is keeping up remarkably well, considering that the holidays are practically over, remarks the Wairoa Star. A noticeable feature with regard to this is the number of cars that have come long distances, very many having come from Wellington and Auckland via Rotorua and Taupo, and then making home via Wairoa and Napier. They all express themselves delighted with the scenery. With regard to the road, they are agreeably surprised, and if the Government continues the good work it is now engaged at there will he certainly nothing to grumble at from a tourist's point of view.
