TE KUITI MEETING OF PROTEST AGAINST PROPOSAL DIVERGENT VIEWS TE KUITI, Monday. As tlie result of a recent decision of the Te Kuiti Borough Council supporting the proposed art union to xaise funds for an aerodrome in the town, there Was a large gathering of eitizens at an indignation meeting in the Empress Theatre after church last night. The meeting was presided over by Mr. H. Hine, a former Mayor. Speeches were delivered, declaring the action of the council ill-ad-vised and ill-considered. : "The Mayor and couneillors have unleashed this monster amongst us, and I eonsider their action most repreherisible," declared Rev. Sussex (Methodist). Rev. E. R. Ross (Presbyterian) said the Christian Church had not taken the stand it should in the past on the question of gambling, in order to create a stronger public opinion on the subject. Questions from the audience showed a divergence of opinion with the speakers. "Everything we do' is a rislc and all business is a gamble," • suggested one. Rev. Ross : "Gambling talces money from productive channels, giving no return for useful service rendered." Rev. Sussex moved that the council he asked to review its decision. This was supported by a member of the audience, and when put the negat'ive voices predominated. On a show df hands the motion was declared lost. A request to support the art union was refused by the Waitomo County Council. ■
