RECORD RAINFALL IN THE GISBORNE DISTRICT •

GISBORNE, Monday. ' Te Karaka experienced the heavi'est rainfall ever recorded, 6.9 5in. fallingJn the 24 hours ended at 9 4.m. yesterday. The streams reached their higliest known levels. ' A bridge' on the Kanakanaia Road, costing £1500, coll'apsed under the pressure of the flood waters, and was completely destroyed. A suspension bridge,'*' costing £900, was also wrecked. 1 Other rainfall records inelude Waimana, 21.17in. in seven days and 6m. in 24 hours; 'and 'Waihoika, 12.75in in five days. Gisborrie has had 9.50in in the week and 4.74 in for the last 48 hours. A half-caste Maori, Alfred Banks, aged 35, of Port Awanui, a married man with seven or eight children, was drowned yesterday in the Waiapu River, which was: in heavy flood. The Poverty Bay Turf Glub's races have been further postponed until to-morrow.
