LOCAL AND GENERAL

Threatening Rain ' 5 Although the weather was xnuch more promising yesterday morning than on Saturday, it was very warm and sultry, and it was evident that there was more rain to corne before the day was out. Forturiately for the Raciiig Club, however, the' rain was eonfined to a few light showers, thus enabling tne meeting to be1 run off without a hitch. Several people, how'ever, had not come prepared for rain, and made for home without waiting to see if the shower would be prolonged for any length of time. Deserted Streets " The Rotorua streets yesterday afternoon, were practically deserted. The majority of the shops were close.d, but a few business people kept their premises open, and grocers and fruiterers did not close. A few scatt'ered shoppers were about the" town, but most non-racegoers evidently expectqd' that all shops would be elosed, and .did not come out. To-day, the usual half-holiday will be held, instead of to-morrow, and shopkeepers therefore will lose only one afternoon's business. Punters Go Astray As a result of the postponement of the races on Saturday six disappointed punters proeeeded to drown their sorrows ih. the flowing bowl. They rather over-did the job with the result that they had to take the decision of the judges in the courthouse yesterday toorning. Being all first offenders they Were convicted and discharged, though two forfeited their bail of 10s. Wait In the Rain Inteiyest in to-day's racing programme at Arawa Park appears to be well sustained. Last evening a large crowd waited patiently in the rain for thd declaration of the acceptances, which closed with the secretary of the club (Mr. E. La Trobe Hill) at 9 p.m. Traffic Control Traffic control arrangements during the Rotorua Racing Cluh's meeting at Arawa Park, have so far functioned well, and the largely increased volume of vehicular traffic has been capably handled by the borough traffic inspector, Mr. D. M. Ford, and his assistants. Adequate parking arrangements have been made, a^d at the conclusion of both days' racing there w&s a minimum of delay as the streams of cars left the ground.
