RICH GOLD REEF

DISCOYERY ON MAHAKIPAWA WAIKAKAHO SADDLE. G'OOD YIELD EXPECTED. Discovery on the Mahakipawa-Wai-kakaho saddle of a reef that is expected to give ds much as 5ozs of gold to a ton, iS oilly One iiistance of the fever of prospecting activity which is gfipping the Domihibh frohi oiie end to the other. Large numhers of miners' rights are being issued, ahd in ever-increasing numbers the goldseekers are looking for the rich strikes of their dreams. Presumably because of the results which have been obtained on the Okarito beach, prospectors have pegged out the West Coast beaches Nfom Greymouth to a point 150 miles south, a Christchurch Sun reporter was told. The Mahakipawa-Waikakaho saddle find was made recently by two prospectors subsidised by the Mines Department. They have been operating in the region for the past six months. 'It is stated that the assays gave grounds for belief that the reef would give five ounces of gold a ton, a rich yield — one ounce a ton means payable working. In the course of the last 50 years, other reefs have been discovered in the same loeality as this one, and have been worked by New Zealand and English companies. "Prospecting activity is intense, all through the country," said one man interested in goldmihihg. Indications were, he added, that there would be a good deal of English capital available for the development of good propositiohs. A fanner of that district has lately been seeuring gold at Longford, abbut four miles ahove Murchison, ahd at the junction of the Buller and Mangles Rivers. The Mangles country has for some time been known to be goldbearing. "An ounce of gold is worth nearly as much as a bale of wool," said one West Coaster. "So the value of the goldmining industry can be realised."
