COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. The Rotorua County Council held its ordinary monthly meeting on Wednesday, the chair being occupied by Cr. H. P. Ford and Crs. J. E. Martin, J. J. Smyth, W. Steele, and A. L. Keith were also present. There was a small amount of business before the meeting. The Public Works Department forwarded £237 in payment for Government works comp'leted by the Council. The district engineer notified that the following roads had been declared main highways: — Rotorua-Lake Tarawera (8m 6cb), Waimangu (4m), and Rotorua-Napier (27m 40ch). The Public Works Department advised that a portion of Central Road was being metalled from funds de rived from the petrol tax and asked that the Council pass the necessary resolution providing for maintenance. — The request was complied with. The Oturoa and Central Road Ratepayers' Assopiation asked for the cxpenditure of timber royalties on repairs to Central Road. A total of £96 has already been spent and it will be necessary to confer with the timber owners before any steps are taken. The engineer will investigate the request for repairs to Oturoa Road, but the Association is to be informeJ that it will be hecessary to colleet rates before the work can be done. It was resolved to' ask the Public Works Department to leave all county quarries used in a workable condition and satisfactory for re-entry by the Council. The Putaruru Chamber of Commerce wrote pointing out that the Public Works Department was likely to open up White's Road as a stock route between Mamaku. It was possible that a wide strip of bush would be felled and burned and the beauty of the route spoiled. Co-operation in urging the preservation of the scenic beauty was asked for. — The engineer was instructed to ascertain the position from the Public Works Department. Taku Ringi wrote complaining that 12 horses were continually breaking into his property on the RotoruaWhakatane Road. He asked the Council to take action, as the horses were a danger to traffic and a pest to the residents of the district. — The clerk or engineer will advise complaning ratepayers to impound straying stocl and state that where possible the Council will take legal proceedings
