OVERDUE RATES
FARMERS ASK THAT TEN PERCENT. PENALTY BE WITHHELD. COUNCIL POSTPONES DECISION. At its meeting yesterday the Rotorua County Council received an appeal from the Ngongotaha branch of the Farmer s' Union, urging that in view of the general depression the 10 per cent. peanalty on unpaid rates be not nforced this year. The chairman (Mr. H. P. Ford) expressed sympathy with the request. but thought a man should be loolced to for some eft'ort to pay at least a portion of his rates. But the position •vas that they had to colleet all or nothing. The clerk pointed out that it was necessary to pass a resolution en"rcing the penalty. The additional narge was not made automatically. On the motion of the chairman, it vas decided to reply to the branch •minting out that the 10 per cent, had not been imposed last year and would ■ r he enforced this year without urther consideration.
