THE WEEK'S RACING

the Judge.

FORM REV1EWED FIELD S FOR POYERTY BAY TARANAKI AND DUNEDIN. THE ROTORUA MEETING.

Specially written for the "Post" by

The stage is well set for the annual • race meeting of the Rotorua Racing Club, which opens on Saturday and concludes on Monday. Excellent fields are engaged on the first day, and the prospects point to there being a few more runners than was the case at the last fixture. The course, at present, in in excellent order, and while rain would be most beneficial, there is a good sole of grass on the track, which does not harden up as do most other courses at this period of the year. For the eight races carded on Saturday the number of horses paid up for is 86, and this averages almost eleven per race. Class is well represented, the hroses remaining in the historic Rotorua Cup contest being good handicap performers, headed by that classy galloper, Paganelli. The sprint -race has attracted a brilliant field, and this contest in itself is well worth travelling a long way to see. Taranaki Meeting. While local sportsmen an'd others adjacent will be fully occupied over the week-end with their own fixture, there are several other meetings scheduled for this week that will claim a good deal of attention on the part of the sporting community throughout the Dominion. For instance, the Poverty Bay, Taranaki and Dunedin fixtures open to-day and conclude on Saturday, while the Marlborough Club races to-morrow and Saturday. The opening event at New Plymouth is the Waitara Iiurdles, with Goshawk heading the list. He has a big impost, but with the fences easier here than at Ellerslie he has his chance. Moerangi was badly ridden at Hawera, and Royal Acre and Blacksmith will fight out their battles over again. Airtight and Whisogne (who is much improved) will help to make it an interesting race. Goshawk, Blacksmith and Whisogne read best. Considering her two fine races last week, Chief Marionette is nicely treated in the Ngamotu Juvenile, and she should add to her record. Merry Way is capable of imiprovement, and Furlong goes fast for this trip. La Crown is very well, and March Alone, Seamond and Miss Cavendish (who showed much promise last week) should he the pick of the remainder. Form points to Chief Marionette, Miss Cavendish, and Furlong. The Flying Handicap is the same field as that which raced at Hawera the first day, when Laughing Prince won so decisively, with Hunting Cry and Silvermine added to make it even more interesting. He is going to take some beating again to-day, despite the liberal concession in weight he has to make Lady Quex. Some considered that Laughing Prince was lucky to beat Lady Quex last week, but that is not the writer's opinion. The issue I seems to be between this pair, with Silvermine and Hunting Cry both both likely, particularly the latter if the going eases a bit. They are a very ordinary lot in the Moturoa Electric, ' Sparkling Morn, ! Loterie, and Glowlight probably being the pick, with Tavora a possibility if caught in the right mood. Will Be Favourite. ! Joie de Val's great finishing effort to run second to Black Duke the final | day at Trentham should he sufficient ! to send her out favourite for the | Taranaki Cup, especially as she will i have that clever lightweight, K. Voitre i in the saddle. That form is easily : i the best of those engaged. Chopin' ) was not caught right either day at Hawera, but he is reported to be shaping bettcr since that meeting. Arikira won so well last week that it is not known just how good he is. This race may try him out again. None of the others can he greatly fancied, although on a heavy track, Little Doubt would be the horse to have on side. Joie de Yal, Arikira and Chopin should fight it out. Attentive was so unlucky to be heaten by Bon Eve at Hawera that he should turn the tables on this horse in the Okato Hack. Bon Eve is always a possibility in a small field like this. Green Patch has a big I weight, but will go well, and Joyspear | disappointed at Hawera. They are fancied as named. Will Deserve to Win. Despite her three wins last week, Awaken has not yet got too much weight, and what heads her in the Mimi High -Weight deserves to win. Just an Idea, Arvada and Calamine may be nearest her when the whips afe produced. If Arvada and The Tiger are produced in the final event, the Timaru Hack, the former may again account for the much boomed gelding, for she is in great form. This pair look like fighting it out, as in their two meetings at Hawera, with Forecful perhaps the pick of the others. It has to be remembered, however, that Arvada is not an easy filly to ride, and she will not have the services of R. _Reed, who usually has the mount. On -Saturday the fixture will be concluded. The main event is the classic, the six furlongs Taranaki Stakes, in which Laughing Prince, Hunting Cry and Lady Quex may figure in the betting market in that order. The firstnamed looks a possibility for a double win at New Plymouth this week. At Dunedin. The meeting of the crack South Island handicap performers, Gay Crest, Compris and Admiral Drake, in the Dunedin Cup this afternoon, invests that meeting at Wingatui with eonsiderable interest. Black Duke is also engaged, and the fact that he is in good form and reeeives liberal - concessions of weight from the other trio malces him a formidable contender. Probably the issue will be fought out by Black Duke, Gay Crest and Compris. Silver Ring looks a "sitter" for the two-yeaf-old classic, the Champagiie Stakes, for good judges regard him as probably the best youngster seen out to date. His Trentham form was high class, and as good as, if not bet-

only four, to oppose Silver Ring today. Other horses whose recent form points to their having rosy prospects to-day at Wingatui are Babel, Royal Limond, Assemble and Princess Argosy. At Gisborne The form disclosed at Gisborne last Thursday and Saturday promises to be the best guide to the prospects at the Poverty Bay meeting to-day and on Saturday. Fields appear to he pretty good on paper, and if the majority of those carded see the post the racing will he very interesting. Horses that appear to be nicely placed in their engagements to-day in view of recent running are Tai Ao (Telegraph Hack and Harbouf Hack) Simeon (Iiurdles), Princess StarKind Words bracket (Maiden Scurry) White Wings (Turanga Stakes or Flying Handicap), and Sunny Song (Summer Hack), with Sunny Sky likely in the Flying Handicap in the iMttliliiittiiKKiflMBi
