AMATEUR ATHLETICS

EVENING FIXTURE SUCCESSFUL MEETING HELD ON HIGH SCHOOL GROUNDS ENTHtTSIASM OF LADIES The evening sports meetings, held under the auspices of the Rotorua Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, were recommenced last Friday evening at the High School grounds before a fair attendance of enthusiasts. All the evehts on the programme were evenly contested. A pleasing feature was the large increase in the lady competitors, the meeting serving as a preparation for those chosen to train for the selection of the ladies' relay team to compete at the Auckland provincial championships on March 5. The cycling events were also well patronised, two recently reinstated riders competing for the first time as amateurs. R. Lillas won the spriqt event over a distance of 220yds from R. Devin, his time off the 16yds mark being 21 3-5sec. Only three entries were received for the 880yds handicap, the winner being R. Devin, who was closely followed by N. Hinton, A. Lillas being placed third. The time registered by the winner, off 60yds, was 2min. 4sec. Better entries were made for the 120yds. hurdles, a good race resulting in the two limit men being placed first and second, although the time registered was rather slow. Ladies' Enthusiasm The enthusiasm of the ladies was proved by the fact that heats were necessary in the 100yds. ladies' handicap, competition in both heats being keen. The winner of the first division was Miss A. Dodson (10yds), who won narrowly from the virtual scratch girl, M. Ford, in 11 4-5sec. In the second heat, a new member, Miss B. Fisk, was placed first, her eight yards' handicap proving too much for B. Cotterell and W. Steele, both off 5yds, who were placed second and third, respectively. In winning the final of the event, A. Dodson improved her time by 2-5sec, M. Ford being second and B. Cottrell third.

The inclusion of a ladies' field event on the programme attracted good entries, seven competitors engaging in the hop, step and jump competition. The best jump was made by A. Dodson, the distance being 29ft. lin., which with her handicap of 5ft, gave her the event. Although only placed third, B. Cottrell made the second best jump off 28ft. lOins., her sister, J. Cottrell being placed second on her handicap of 5ft, after jumping 27ft. 7ins. The ladies' relay race was the most interesting event on the programme, and resulted in a win for the A team, who were closely followed by the C team. A double success was scored by N. Howe in the cycling events, his handicap in both events being too much for the scratch man, A. Griffiths, to overcome. In the two-mile event, P. Bell, who was giving him 100yds, ran into second place after a good race. Detailed Results The detailed results of the events for the evening follow: — 220 Yards Handicap. — R. Lillas, 1; R.
