Rec. Feb. 7, 5.5 p.m. SYDNEY, Sunday. The East Sydney by-election, which ■took place yesterday, is creating tfemendous , iriterest. The defeat. of the IJriited Austrrilia: carididate, Mr. W. McCall, will mean that the Lyon's Government's absolute. majotity over all other parties iil the House of Re-V presentatives will be oniy one, leaving the Lyon's Government at the niercy of the Country Party, which, iri alliance with the Opposition Labour groups could make thirigs awkward, especially as the Country Party is already nettlqd over its failurb to receive the Customs portfolio. On the completion of the first count last riight, the Lang Plan candidate, Mr. E. J. Ward, who originally held the seat. but was defeated by a narrow majority at the recent Federal electibn, had a majority of 1.313 over Mr. McCall. There will be 'a olose battle. The preferences .will deci'de the issue with the odds slightly in favour of Mr. Ward. The latest figures are:— -Ward CLang Laboitl-) , 17,195; 'McCall (United Australial, 15.882; L. Cunninghain (Federal Labou'-), 2,729; J. Miles (Communist), 585.
