A scruh fire on the Ngongotaha side of the Utuhina Stream at Ohinemutu, which has been blazing for the past two days came dangerously near some houses on Tuesday evening and caused the occupants considerable alarm. Again yesterday afternoon the fire approaehed the houses but the heavy shower of rain which fell at about 3.30 p.m. prevented it from spreading any nearer. The residents, nearby, however, are keeping a watch on the fire's progress in case a call to the brigade becomes necessary. New Telephone Switchboard. The new branching multiple telephone exchange being installed at the Rotorua Post Office is nearing completion and should be ready for use about the middle of next week. The engineers working on the joh have had a long and tedious time connerting many thousands of wires and carefully soldering each so that there will be the minimum of maintenance work. The actual switch over from the old to the new hoard is* but a few minutes' operation, and Rotorua subscribers should then obtain the benefits of quicker service, especially during rush pe'riods. Bowling, Club Competitions. The Rotorua Bowling Club's singles competitions were continued on the rinks in the Government Gardens yesterday afternoon and most of the games were completed before the Jieavy shower of rain at about 3.30 p.m. soaked the greens. None of the matehes resulted in a close finish. Results are as follows: Sing'les — Brownie 22 beat Lasenby 17. Pairs: French and Pakes 19 beat Morland and Cottrell 16; Hamilton and Fowkes 25 beat Merriman and Richards 20; Stallard and Stonehouse 25 beat Hall and Brooker 14. N. Z. Alliance Meeting.
