some gqod catches HEAVY FISH. TAKEN AT OKATAINA AND TAUPQ. FORTNIGHTLY REPORT, Some good catches are recorded in the fortnightly angling reports for 1 the Rotorua and Taupo areas, prepar- • ed by the Conservator of Fish and Game (Mr. A. Kean). Mr, Matheson, Jr., using the fly at the mouth of the Utuhina for three days, toolc 22 fish averaging 2ilb, the heaviest fish weighing 4ilb. Twentyfive fish were taken in one day by Messrs.- Turner and Matheson, fly fishing at Waikuta. Fishing with the spoon at Awahou and Hamurana, Mr. and Mrs. Monkhouse caught 15 good conditioned fish averaging 2ilh. Some" heaVy fish in fair condition were taken on the fly at Tarawera. Ainong the best catches on this lake were those of Mr. Currie and party, who took 14 fish averaging 41b, and with the heaviest fish weighing 5£lb, Mr. E. C. Adolph, who took 12 fish averaging 3:]lb, and two local anglers, who took 13 fish averaging 41b. Heavy Fish. Lake Okataina also provided some good sport and the average weight of the fish taken from this lake had been the heaviest of all localities during the period. Messrs. Iles and Nisson took six fish averaging 71b, and with the heaviest fish weighing 8Hb, while Mr. Iles, fishing alone, had taken two fish averaging 5ilb. In Lake Rotorua, the mouth of the Awahou stream had been well fished with good results, the best catches being taken at night. In this area, Mr. Ashley had taken a limit bag averaging 2|lb, Mr. Wolgram had also taken a limit averaging 2?lb, Mr. McCabe had taken 14 fish averaging 31b, and Mr. R. Smith, 12 fish averaging 3Hb. The heaviest fish of this catch turned the scales at 8Slb. Whakatane-Opotiki Areas. Rivers in the Whakatane- Olp otiki area had been well fished and some good bags had been taken. Among; the bags taken in this area were the following: Mr. James Kelly, 15 fish, averaging 1Mb, heaviest fish, 31b: This catch was taken on the Waioeka. Mr. T. Edwardson, 10 fish, averaging 21b, largest fish 451b, also taken on the Waioeka. Mr. Frank Lord, 10 fish, averaging 251b, heaviest fish 451b taken in the Waimana. Other catches were: Messrs. J. Kearns and C. Nelson, 6; H. MacGregor and T. Edwardson, 8; Gordon Forbes, F. Claydon and J, Kelly, 5; L. Parkinson aricj V. Addison, 4; L. Lines, C. Cooper an4 W. Dolan, 3. The heaviest fish taken in this area were 61b (2), 5ilb (1), 51b (1), and several ranging from 3 Mb to 4Mb. The Wairakei area had not been fished a great deal during the past two weeks. Mr. H. Gray, trolling near Wairakei, had obtained six good fish, while Mr. Yates had obtained a similar bag fly fishing at the Aratiatia rapids. Near Rotokawa, Mr. Fulljames had obtained a limit bag, and another catch of 13, the average weight of the fish being 31b. Fish taken in the Waikaremoana area had been small and the average had not exceeded 21b. Taupo Area. Westerly winds had interfered with fishing during the past week, but in spite of the conditions, some excellent bags had been taken, the Taupo section of the report states. The condition of the fish taken had generally improved and anglers generally were very satisfied both with the quantity and quality of the fish. At Tokaanu, parties trolling with the fly had all had good catches: Motuopa Bay, Stump Bay and the mouths of the Delta were fishing particularly well. Fishing at Tongariro was difficult, as there appeared to be very few fish in the river. Jellicoe Point water was fishing better than it had done for years and one anglef who had fished there every season considered the fish and fishing better than since 1927. Good catches were being taken at the outlet at Waitahanui. Catches ranged from 6 to 12, and fish up to 10Mb had been taken. Harling in the bay had been exceptionally good and several limit bags had been taken during the past week. Two, Three and Four Mile bays were fishing better at present than earlier in the season and the best bags were being taken in the early niorning and late evening. Furlher Good Catches. Launch parties harling, had fieen taking good catches.' In three days' fishing, a party of three ladies took 71 fish, mostly on the fly, and other catches were from 12 to 30 fish. Row ;hoats were all getting fair catches, and one boat had taken 10 good fish , harling in the bay off the townshfp. Drs. Wardell and Annett, and Mr. Going, fishing for a week at the mo.uth of the Wanganui stream, had taken 150 good conditioned fish on the fly. Several 9|lb and 8lb fish were included in this total. ' Mrs. Holden and a party of three rods used the launch Tainui for three days and tooh 71 fish, of which 60 were taken on the fly. The average weight of this catch was 51b, and the heayi'est fish weighed 7|lb. Messrs. Whitney and Dwyer and two other rods took 62 fish, averaging 51b, at Whapaipo Bay using the fly. This catch was taken for a day's fishing. ,Mr. Fulljames' party of three rods had accounted for 52 very good conditioned fish taken on the spoon at Whangamata in two days. The average weight of this catch was 51b, and the heaviest fish weighed 8Mb. Mr. Hector Gray, using the fly at the Roto Ngaio outlet, had taken a limit bag averaging 4Mb. Launch Catches. ■ Mr. Zwar, an Australian angler, ■ had also taken, a limit bag from the launch Tamati, operating at Mine ; Point and Whakaipo Bay. Mr. Robertson and three other rods in'the launch Kingfisher had taken 20 fish on the spoon at Rangitira Point for a sin.g;le day's outing. Mr. W. Harvey- and party in the launch Dawn used the spoon at Mine Point one afternoon and took 20 fish- averaging 4|lh. Fish-

ing with the fly from the rocks at Rangitira Point, Messrs. Yateman, Nelson and Saunders had taken 15 good fish averaging 5Mb, with the heaviest scaling 9 Mb. Mr. Herrick and party, at Whakaipo Bay, had taken 18 fish on the fly, the catch averaging 5Mb. Other catches recorded were Mr. Wilson and party, launch Tamati, 12; Mr. Newton, launch Dawn, 12; Mr. I. Potts, 6; Mr. Moody, 10. Dry fly fishing on the Waikato near the Huka Falls had been popular, two to fonr fish being taken by anglers each day. The conditions, however, had been rather hard in this locality, the rise having f allen off since earlier • in the season.
