CRICKET

5 N. L.

HINTON.

(To the Editor) Sir, — In regard to "Armchair Critie's" criticism of the Bay of Plenty cricket team I would like to dispute his unfair remarlcs regarding Beale. By dint of these remarks the writer has quite clearly shown that he has not followed closely the local competitions, or if so, has not taken into consideration Beale's very fine b'atting throughout the season. If performances count at all, Beale should certainly be the first batsman selected. "Armchair Critic". also remarks on Beale's lax fielding. Having played with him in all his matches this season, I cannot but disagree with this statement. While admitting that his fielding is by no means brilliant, I say quite freely that it is well up to the standard of the very mediocre display in the recent trial match at Rotorua. ' If however, his fielding were on the wealc side, his batting more than compensates for this. Armchair Critic" next refers to Godsaiye's seventies and nineties. Godsalve is without doubt a fine bat, but can his performances compare with Beale's?" Beale has scores ranging from forty to over ninety all through the season, giving him an average of over seventy. In conclusion I would ask "Armchair Critic" to wait till the numbers go up and I am confident that even if neither of the two others criticised do, Beale at least will have justified his inclusion. — I am. etc..
